Safety vs Comfort: How we do both at RE ZRO®

For years, impact protection has seemed to ask riders to make a trade off: increased safety, or increased comfort.

From day 1 at RE ZRO®, we didn’t think that trade off should exist. Riders should have impact protection that remains comfortable all day, without compromising on their safety. And we believe our design process reflects that.

Protection that has to perform, every time

It is no secret that in the sectors we’re used in, riders experience their fair share of bumps, scrapes, and big hits. Whether it's a fall on an MTB trail, or a crash on your motorbike, you need protection that you know you can rely on. Something that takes the hit for you, remaining effective no matter the conditions (hot, cold or anything in between).

Much of the protection on the market is foam-based. When they were first introduced, these foams were a genuine improvement from the hard-shell designs that predated them. Soft, comfortable, flexible instead of bulky and stiff, seems like a good option right? The problem is, when it gets too cold the foams become brittle. This increases the risk of the protection snapping right when you need it the most. Then, when it's too warm the opposite happens - it gets too soft and the performance drops.

Protection you can forget about

Since the beginning, RE ZRO® was built around a core ethos ‘Impact Protection. Made Better”. While we talk a lot about the sustainability side of things, ensuring our protection doesn't compromise on performance is just as important to us. We asked a different question: what if armour could stay soft and flexible during normal movement, then respond instantly and consistently the moment it's needed - regardless of temperature?

RE ZRO® armour is made from shear-thinning materials, meaning the more force applied, the softer the material becomes. Under everyday movements, RE ZRO® armour behaves like flexible and comfortable armour that moves with you. Upon impact, the force is spread and our armour becomes more fluid, absorbing the impact. This allows riders to stay comfortable for longer, while not compromising on any level of safety.

Independent reviewers have commented on our unique processes and design. Vital MTB's review of the ION Arcon HD Pro chest protector highlighted how the RE ZRO® material conforms to the body, and noted that testers never experienced sweat pooling in the material -  two of the most common complaints about traditional protective gear. Additionally, MC Gear Hub's review of our back protector praised it as one of the best-ventilated CE Level 2 back protectors available, while also putting it through cold-weather testing as low as 5°C - exactly the kind of condition where conventional foam tends to struggle. So don’t just take it from us, our armour has been tried and tested, pushed to the limits and the results speak for themselves.

We definitely don’t have all the answers, but we are committed to living up to our core ethos, and providing riders and athletes with protection that they feel both safe and comfortable in.

Protection that doesn’t compromise

Comfort and flexibility only matter if the protection is still there, which is why RE ZRO® armour is tested to CE Level 1 and 2 certifications, so you can feel secure in your gear.

For us, that’s the whole point, comfort, flexibility and better design shouldn’t come at the cost of performance and vice versa. We are continually trying to innovate and improve our designs, so riders can have the best possible experience when out on the trail or track.

Impact Protection. Made Better.
